What is Sashiko?
Some may recognize it as the fabric used for kendo and judo gis/garments. Sashiko fabric is a thick and sturdy material, distinguished by its unique texture, created by weaving cotton threads in an alternating over‑under pattern. Originally, Sashiko was used for reinforcement and insulation by layering fabric and sewing it together.
JAPAN BLUE JEANS has adapted Sashiko to make it more wearable in modern clothing. The three-dimensional texture perfectly matches contemporary fashion.
Though traditionally stiff, our version is light, soft, and easy to move in. Plus, JAPAN BLUE JEANS' Sashiko is dyed with indigo, allowing you to enjoy aging (fading) similar to denim. It's also machine washable, making it easy to care for.
Experience the Unique Aging of Sashiko Fabric
The deep indigo gradually softens, and the textured look of Sashiko becomes more pronounced. Areas with more friction, such as around the waist and pockets, show more fading, highlighting the unique texture of Sashiko. Over time, the fabric becomes softer, developing a distinctive patina that can only come from use. It’s a fabric you’ll enjoy wearing for years as it ages gracefully.
